Diabetes is the most important cause of peripheral neuropathy. No definitive treatment for diabetic neuropathy has been established, and very few data on the role of exercise training on diabetic neuropathy have been reported. This study assessed the effects of balance exercise program on balance, gait and proprioception in older adults with diabetic neuropathy. 33 diabetic patients with signs and symptoms of peripheral neuropathy were enrolled, randomized and subdivided in two groups: 16 diabetic participants(73.8 ¡¾ 5.4 years old), and a control group of 17 diabetic participants(73.0 ¡¾ 5.1 years old). Both groups received diabetic health education for 50 minutes per week during 8 weeks. Experimental group practiced additional balance exercise programs for 60 minutes. Exercise training was performed 2 times weekly for 8 weeks. Results were evaluated by static balance, dynamic balance, proprioception. The results of study were as follows. Postural sway path significantly decreased(p<.05), one leg stance test significantly increased(p<.05), dynamic balance from Berg balance scale, functional reach test, timed up and go test improved significantly after balance exercise(p<.05). Trunk repositioning errors also decreased with training(p<.05). In conclusion, the balance exercise program improves balance and proprioception. These results suggest that balance exercise is suitable for individuals with a diabetic neuropathy.
